What's the Difference Between Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, and Gyan Yoga?

The difference between the Bhagavad Gita's three principal paths — Bhakti, Karma, and Gyan Yoga — and how to figure out which suits you.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna describes three principal paths to Arjuna — Karma Yoga, Gyan Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga. All three lead to the same goal — union of the individual soul with the Divine — but the routes differ, and each tends to feel more natural to a particular temperament.

⚙️ Karma Yoga — The Path of Action Performing one's duty without attachment to the results. This suits those who are active and service-oriented, and who feel connected to the Divine through work and selfless action.

📖 Gyan Yoga — The Path of Knowledge Understanding "who am I" through self-inquiry, discernment, and deep study. This suits contemplative, intellectually-inclined temperaments.

❤️ Bhakti Yoga — The Path of Devotion Connecting to the Divine through love, surrender, and faith. This is the most natural path for emotional, heart-centered temperaments — and is widely considered the most accessible of the three.

🌿 Which Path is Right for You?

Most people naturally blend all three. Krishna himself notes in the Gita that the paths ultimately converge — action without devotion can become hollow, knowledge without devotion can breed ego, and devotion naturally gives rise to both service (karma) and understanding (gyan).

Recognize your own temperament, begin there, and the other paths tend to weave themselves into your practice over time.
