The significance of the mango leaf Toran, the tradition of hanging it, and the auspicious occasions
🕉️ What is a Toran?
A Toran is a decorative garland made by stringing fresh mango leaves together, hung at the main doorway of a home. It's a common and beautiful tradition in Hindu households on auspicious occasions.
Why does it matter?
Mango leaves are regarded as a symbol of prosperity, new beginnings, and auspiciousness. It's believed that hanging a Toran at the doorway ensures that the energy entering the home is pure and positive — the greenery of the leaves is also seen as a sign of vitality and growth.
📿 How is it hung?
Fresh mango leaves (sometimes combined with Ashoka leaves) are strung in sequence on a thread and tied across the top of the doorway. In some traditions, flowers are also woven into the Toran.
📅 When is it hung?
Hanging a Toran is considered auspicious during Griha Pravesh, Diwali, Navratri, weddings, Ganesh Chaturthi, and any auspicious puja or ritual.
✨ Benefits
A Toran is believed to bring positive energy and prosperity into the home. It also visually makes the entrance feel festive and welcoming.
⚠️ Precautions
Remove the Toran once it dries out, and dispose of it respectfully and naturally — avoid leaving withered, dried leaves hanging at the doorway for too long.
