Buddha Purnima
Commemorating Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing — all on the same auspicious day
History
Buddha Purnima falls on the full moon of the Vaishakh month, also known as "Vesak." Tradition holds that Gautam Buddha's birth, his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, and his Mahaparinirvana (passing) at Kushinagar all occurred on this same date — making it one of the most sacred days in Buddhist tradition. In Hindu tradition, Buddha is also revered as one of Vishnu's ten principal avatars.
Significance
The day recalls Buddha's teachings of compassion, non-violence, and the Middle Path, with special prayer gatherings held at Buddhist pilgrimage sites like Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, and Kushinagar.
Puja Vidhi
Bathe early, offer lamps and flowers before an image of Buddha, meditate and pray, and extend compassion by helping those in need.
Muhurat
Prayer and meditation any time during the Purnima tithi is considered auspicious; check the Panchang for the exact date.
