    Guru Purnima

A sacred day for expressing gratitude and reverence toward one's teacher

    ⏳ 295 days to go (2027)

    History

Guru Purnima falls on the full moon of the Ashadh month and commemorates the birth of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, compiler of the Vedas and author of the Mahabharata — hence its alternate name, "Vyasa Purnima." The day honours the ancient guru-shishya (teacher-disciple) tradition, expressing gratitude toward every source of knowledge — spiritual gurus, teachers, and mentors alike.

    Significance

In Indian tradition, the guru is revered as equal to the divine, for it is the guru who leads a disciple from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The day is also observed in Buddhist and Jain traditions to honour their respective teachers.

    Puja Vidhi

Bathe early and honour your guru or spiritual guide with worship or heartfelt remembrance, offering flowers and gifts where possible. Disciples who cannot be present in person can express their reverence through prayer and gratitude.

    Muhurat

Worship any time during the Purnima tithi is considered auspicious; check the Panchang for the exact date.
