History
Located in Ujjain (ancient Avantika), Mahakaleshwar is the only south-facing (Dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga among the twelve, giving it special significance in Tantric tradition. Legend tells of Shiva manifesting here to protect a child devotee, Shrikar, and slaying the demon Dushana, choosing to remain forever as Mahakal. The temple has three levels — Mahakaleshwar in the sanctum, Omkareshwar above it, and Nagchandreshwar at the top, which opens to the public only once a year on Nag Panchami.
Spiritual significance
Mahakaleshwar's Bhasma Aarti — the pre-dawn ritual performed with sacred ash — is world-famous, and visitors typically need to book permission online in advance to witness it. Ujjain is also one of India's seven sacred Sapta Puri cities and one of the four Kumbh Mela sites.
