History
Sabarimala temple sits atop a hill amid dense forest, dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, son of Shiva and Mohini (Vishnu's female form). Its most famous tradition is climbing the 18 sacred steps (Pathinettampadi), reserved for devotees who have completed a 41-day vratam (fast) and wear the ritual mala. The temple opens to pilgrims only during specific periods of the year.
Spiritual significance
Sabarimala is notable for its social inclusiveness — devotees of all castes and faiths (among eligible male and child pilgrims) may worship here, making it one of India's most socially inclusive pilgrimage traditions.
