Gudi Padwa
The traditional New Year of Maharashtra and the Konkan region, marked by hoisting the Gudi flag
History
Gudi Padwa falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada and marks the traditional New Year for Maharashtrian and Konkani Hindus. Tradition holds that Brahma began the creation of the universe on this day. Homes hoist a "Gudi" — a decorated pole with a silk cloth, neem leaves, a garland, and an inverted copper pot — at the entrance, symbolizing prosperity and victory.
Significance
The day also marks the start of the Shalivahan Shaka calendar year and is considered highly auspicious for new beginnings, purchases, and launching new ventures.
Puja Vidhi
Bathe early and hoist the Gudi at the main entrance. Worship Lord Brahma, and partake of the traditional sweet "Shrikhand-Puri" along with neem leaves — symbolizing life's balance of bitter and sweet.
Muhurat
Early morning is considered auspicious for hoisting the Gudi and performing puja; check the Panchang for the exact date and time.
