Raksha Bandhan
The bond of protection between brothers and sisters
History
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon (Purnima) of the Shravan month. Several legends surround it — one tells of Goddess Lakshmi tying a rakhi to King Bali; another well-loved story recounts Draupadi tearing a strip from her saree to bind Krishna's bleeding finger, in return for which Krishna vowed to always protect her.
Significance
The festival symbolizes the love, trust, and mutual protection between siblings. Sisters tie a rakhi on their brother's wrist, praying for his long life, while brothers pledge to protect and support her.
Puja Samagri List
- Rakhi (one or more)
- Roli/kumkum
- Akshat (whole, uncooked rice)
- A lit diya with ghee or oil
- Sweets
- Aarti thali
- Coconut (customary in some families, not mandatory)
Puja Vidhi
After the morning bath, prepare a puja thali with rakhi, roli, rice, and sweets. Apply tilak on the brother's forehead, perform aarti, and tie the rakhi. The brother offers a gift and pledges lifelong protection.
Muhurat
The auspicious time to tie rakhi falls on Purnima tithi, avoiding the inauspicious Bhadra period. Check the Panchang for the exact window.
