    What it means

Ganpati Bappa Morya. Bappa is Marathi for father. Morya comes from Morya Gosavi of Chinchwad, a saint devoted to Ganesha.

    Where it comes from

It's said there's no greater honour for a devotee than to have their name joined to God's, and that's exactly what happened to Morya Gosavi. In 1893 Lokmanya Tilak turned Ganeshotsav from a household puja into a public festival, and the call became Maharashtra's own. On immersion day it picks up a second line: pudhchya varshi lavkar ya.

    How to chant it

With dhol and tasha, and with everyone. It's meant for a crowd far more than for one voice.

When: From Ganesh Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi.
