    What it means

I bow to Mahalakshmi. Shreem is her seed syllable, and the word shri itself carries prosperity, grace and good fortune together.

    Where it comes from

Putting shri before a name is a mark of respect in Hindi, and that respect comes from Lakshmi. On Diwali night this mantra is said in almost every home during Lakshmi puja, and many families light a lamp on Friday evenings and chant a round of it.

    How to chant it

A lotus-seed mala is traditional. Offer a lotus or a red flower to Lakshmi, light a ghee lamp, and chant.

When: Friday evenings, and Diwali night.
