History
Srirangam's Ranganathaswamy temple stands on an island between the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers and is regarded as foremost among the 108 Divya Desams of Vaishnava tradition. The complex spans roughly 156 acres with 21 towering gopurams, the tallest — the Rajagopuram — rising about 73 metres, among the tallest temple towers in Asia.
Spiritual significance
Owing to its scale, it is often called the "world's largest functioning Hindu temple" (Angkor Wat, though larger, is not an active site of worship), and its annual Vaikunta Ekadasi festival draws millions of devotees.
