History
Set atop the seven hills of Tirumala, this temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Venkateswara form, believed to have manifested here in the Kali Yuga to relieve devotees' suffering. Its architectural tradition developed across the Pallava, Chola, and Vijayanagara periods. Millions of pilgrims visit daily, making it one of the most-visited religious sites in the world.
Spiritual significance
The temple is managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), one of the wealthiest religious trusts in the world. Offering one's hair (tonsure) is a distinctive and widely observed tradition here.
