History
The Vaidyanath temple at Deoghar is linked to a story about Ravana, who performed intense penance to move Shiva from Kailash to Lanka. After eventually offering his own heads in devotion, Shiva appeared as a divine physician (Vaidya) and healed him — giving this Jyotirlinga its name. The site is world-famous for the Shravani Mela, during which millions of "Kanwariyas" carry Ganga water on foot roughly 105 km from Sultanganj to perform the jalabhishek here.
Spiritual significance
Vaidyanath Dham is regarded as the only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas that is also a "Kamna Linga" — believed to grant devotees' heartfelt wishes. The complex includes the main Vaidyanath shrine alongside 21 other temples dedicated to Parvati and other deities.
