Akshaya Tritiya
The day of imperishable, ever-multiplying merit
See all Vishnu content →History
Akshaya Tritiya falls on the Shukla Tritiya of Vaishakh month. Tradition holds it as the birth day of Lord Parashurama, an avatar of Vishnu, and also the day sage Vedavyasa began narrating the Mahabharata to Ganesha. "Akshaya" means that which never diminishes — merit earned on this day is believed to be imperishable.
Significance
The day is considered a "swayam-siddha" auspicious muhurat — meaning every good deed, purchase, or new beginning (weddings, housewarmings, buying gold, charity) undertaken on it is auspicious without needing to consult a separate muhurat.
Puja Vidhi
Bathe in the morning and worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Give charity as per your means — food, clothes, or gold. Starting new ventures, and purchasing gold or property, are considered especially auspicious on this day.
Mantra
ॐ विष्णवे नमः॥
Om Vishnave Namah॥
This mantra is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, chanted to invoke prosperity and auspiciousness.
Muhurat
The entire day is considered a self-auspicious (swayam-siddha) muhurat, so consulting a separate time window is traditionally unnecessary.
