Dhanteras
The opening day of Diwali — dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari and Kubera, gods of health and wealth
See all Lakshmi content →History
Dhanteras falls on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi and marks the opening day of the five-day Diwali festival. Tradition holds that Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of Ayurveda, emerged with the pot of nectar (amrit kalash) during the churning of the cosmic ocean on this day — which is why it is also observed as "National Ayurveda Day." Buying gold, silver, new utensils, or clothing is considered especially auspicious on this day.
Significance
In the evening, lighting a lamp for Yamaraj at the main entrance ("Yam Deepak") is a widely observed tradition, believed to ward off untimely death. The day is dedicated to seeking blessings for both wealth and good health.
Puja Vidhi
Thoroughly clean the home and shop, and decorate the entrance with rangoli and lamps. In the evening, worship Dhanvantari, Kubera, and Goddess Lakshmi, and ritually consecrate any new purchases — especially metal items.
Muhurat
The Pradosh Kaal (the period just after sunset) is considered most auspicious for the puja. Check the Panchang for the exact muhurat.
