Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
The triumph of truth over falsehood — marked by Ravana Dahan and Shastra Puja
See all Ram content →History
Vijayadashami falls on the tenth day of Sharad Navratri. In North India, it commemorates Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, marked by burning towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad (Ravana Dahan). In eastern India, especially Bengal, the same day celebrates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura and her ceremonial immersion (visarjan) — both traditions share the underlying message of truth triumphing over falsehood.
Significance
The day is considered highly auspicious for new beginnings and starting a child's formal education (Vidyarambham). Traditionally, it is also marked by Shastra Puja — the ritual worship of weapons and tools, especially within Kshatriya and military traditions.
Puja Vidhi
Bathe early and offer prayers to Goddess Durga and Lord Rama. Exchanging leaves of the Shami tree is a traditional gesture symbolizing good fortune. In the evening, watching the Ravana Dahan and performing "Aparajita Puja" (worship of the "unconquerable" goddess) are customary, symbolizing victory.
Muhurat
The "Vijay Muhurat" (around midday, the Abhijit period) is considered especially auspicious for starting new ventures. Check the local Panchang for exact timing.
