Meaning
"Jai Ambe Gauri" is the aarti of Maa Durga, worshipped as Shyama Gauri and as Adi Shakti, the primordial power. Its verses describe her form — sindoor in the parting of her hair, a musk tilak on her brow, a body like gold, crimson robes and a garland of red flowers, the lion she rides, and the sword and skull-bowl in her hands. She is the force that slew Shumbha, Nishumbha, Dhumralochan and Mahishasura, before whom sixty-four yoginis sing and Bhairav dances. The closing couplet carries the signature of Shivanand Swami. It is sung through the nine nights of Navratri, at Durga Puja, and in daily devotion to the Goddess.
Benefits
- 🪷Essential to the worship of all nine nights of Navratri
- 🪷Sung to close a recitation of the Durga Saptashati or Durga Chalisa
- 🪷Traditionally sung to dispel fear, illness and hostility
- 🪷Sung at the kanya pujan performed on Ashtami and Navami
Chanting Method
Light an akhand jyoti or ghee lamp before an image of Maa Durga and offer red flowers, sindoor and a chunri. Sing the aarti while circling the lamp clockwise; bell, clapping and conch accompany it. Close by offering halwa-puri or mishri as bhog.
Best Time
The evening aarti during Navratri is the most auspicious; otherwise it may be sung both morning and evening on any day.
