See all Ganesh content →History
Ganesh Chaturthi is observed on the Shukla Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month, marking the day Lord Ganesha, sculpted by Goddess Parvati, was brought to life. The festival spans ten days and concludes on Anant Chaturdashi with the immersion (visarjan) of Ganesha idols.
Significance
Ganesha is revered as the remover of obstacles and the deity of wisdom. The festival is an occasion to seek his blessings before new beginnings and to celebrate community devotion and unity.
Puja Vidhi
Install a Ganesha idol and perform the pran-pratishtha ritual. Offer durva grass, modaks, and red flowers. Perform daily aarti, and after ten days, immerse the idol in water following proper rites.
Mantra
ॐ गं गणपतये नमः॥
Om Gam Ganapataye Namah॥
This is the Ganesha bija mantra, believed to remove obstacles and grant wisdom and success.
Muhurat
Idol installation is best done at the midday muhurat of Chaturthi tithi; viewing the moon on this day is traditionally considered inauspicious.
