    History

The Gnana Saraswati temple at Basara stands on the banks of the Godavari and is linked to sage Vyasa — tradition holds that after composing the Mahabharata, Vyasa installed Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Kali here from a handful of river sand. It is one of India's very few major temples dedicated to Saraswati, in a country where most temples honour Shiva, Vishnu, or Shakti.

    Spiritual significance

The temple is especially popular for "Aksharabhyasam," the traditional ceremony marking a child's first formal introduction to writing and learning.
