    Meaning

"Jai Saraswati Mata" is the aarti of Maa Saraswati, goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts. Its verses describe her luminous form — a moon-like face, her lotus seat, the swan she rides, the veena in her left hand and the rosary in her right, a jewelled crown and a string of pearls at her throat. One verse recalls the episode in which the goddess entered the mind of the maidservant Manthara, setting in motion Rama's exile and so, at last, the destruction of Ravana. The closing verses ask her for the eye of knowledge and the ending of ignorance. It is sung at Vasant Panchami, at the start of a child's education, and especially by students and artists.

    Benefits

    • 🪷A central part of the Vasant Panchami puja
    • 🪷Sung at vidyarambh, a child's first letters, and the start of an academic year
    • 🪷Sung by students before examinations to steady concentration
    • 🪷Traditional before beginning practice in music, dance, or the arts

    Chanting Method

Place white or yellow flowers before an image of Maa Saraswati, along with a book or a musical instrument. Light a ghee lamp and sing the aarti while circling it clockwise. Close by offering saffron kheer, boondi, or yellow rice as bhog.

    Best Time

Vasant Panchami is the most auspicious day; otherwise, early morning before beginning study is considered suitable.

    FAQ

In the Ramayana tradition, Saraswati entered the mind of the maidservant Manthara, prompting Kaikeyi's boons and Rama's exile — the chain of events that finally brought about Ravana's destruction.

According to this aarti, the veena is in her left hand and a rosary in her right. Other traditions also depict her with a book and a lotus.
