    Meaning

"Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki" honours Shri Krishna as Kunj Bihari — the one who wanders the groves of Vrindavan — and as Giridhar and Murari. Its verses paint his enchanting form: the vaijayanti garland, the flute at his lips, the earrings that catch the light, the musk tilak on his brow and the golden peacock crown, with Radhika radiant beside him. The third verse recalls the Ganga that rose from his feet and came to rest in Shiva's matted hair. It is sung at Krishna puja, at Janmashtami, and at the evening aarti in Vaishnav temples.

    Benefits

    • 🪷A central part of the midnight puja on Janmashtami
    • 🪷Sung daily at the evening aarti in Vaishnav temples
    • 🪷Sung to quiet a restless mind and awaken devotional feeling
    • 🪷Among the most popular songs on the Vrindavan and Braj parikrama and in kirtan

    Chanting Method

Light a ghee lamp before an image of Krishna and offer tulsi leaves. Sing the aarti while circling the lamp clockwise — in temples it is sung together with cymbals, mridang and conch. Close by offering makhan-mishri or panchamrit as bhog.

    Best Time

The evening aarti hour is best; the midnight of Janmashtami and Ekadashi days are especially auspicious.

    FAQ

In Vaishnav tradition the Ganga issued from Vishnu's feet and was received into Shiva's matted hair. The verse recalls the glory of those same feet.

Kunj means a grove of flowering creepers and bihari means one who wanders there. Krishna is called Kunj Bihari because he roams the groves of Vrindavan with Radha.
