Govardhan Puja
Commemorating Krishna lifting Govardhan Hill to shelter the people of Gokul
See all Krishna content →History
Govardhan Puja falls on Kartik Shukla Pratipada, the day after Diwali. Legend holds that when Indra, angered, unleashed torrential rain upon the people of Gokul, the young Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill on his little finger and sheltered the entire village beneath it for seven days. In commemoration, a replica of the hill is fashioned from cow dung and ritually worshipped on this day.
Significance
The day also marks the "Annakut" celebration, where a vast array of dishes is offered to Krishna as bhog — symbolizing gratitude for the harvest and cattle wealth.
Puja Vidhi
Fashion a small replica of Govardhan Hill from cow dung or clay, decorate it with flowers and lamps. Prepare the Annakut offering for Krishna, and perform special worship of the cow.
Muhurat
The puja is typically performed in the morning during the Pratipada tithi; check the local Panchang for exact timing.
