    History

The temple is at Udaipur in Tripura and is known locally as Matabari. It is generally credited to Maharaja Dhanya Manikya of Tripura in the 16th century. The mound on which the sanctum stands is shaped like a tortoise, which is why it is called the Kurma Peeth.

    Spiritual significance

It is counted among the 51 Shakti Peethas; by tradition the right foot of Sati fell here. The sanctum holds two images of the goddess, the larger Tripura Sundari and the smaller Chhotima. Beside the temple is a large tank, Kalyan Sagar, where pilgrims feed the big fish and tortoises. A very large fair is held here at Diwali.
