    History

The Vimala temple stands inside the Jagannath temple complex at Puri, in the south-west corner of the inner enclosure, beside the Rohini Kunda. Its central icon is dated to the sixth century CE, while the present structure is generally placed in the ninth century under the Eastern Ganga dynasty — possibly over the remains of an older shrine. The *Madala Panji* credits its construction to the Somavamshi ruler Yayati Keshari instead, so the dating remains contested. Traditional lists say Sati's foot fell here, though one reading of the *Pithanirnaya* links the site to the navel or to *uchchhishta* (left-over food), and treats it as an upa-peetha rather than a full one.

    Spiritual significance

Puri's single most important food tradition runs through this shrine: what is offered to Jagannath is not counted as mahaprasad until it has also been offered to Vimala. Which means the lakhs of pilgrims who receive Puri's mahaprasad are, without necessarily realising it, receiving the prasad of a Shakti Peetha. During the sixteen days of Durga Puja she receives special worship, and some of those rites are still performed before dawn and kept private.

    Darshan timings

Follows the Jagannath temple's hours, broadly 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM with breaks for rituals. Note that the Jagannath temple does not permit entry to non-Hindus.

Timings change on festivals and special occasions. Confirm with the temple's official source before you travel.

Puri railway station has direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi and Bhubaneswar, and rickshaws or autos cover the short distance to the Jagannath temple. Vimala isn't reached separately — she is visited within the Jagannath complex itself, towards the south-west of the inner enclosure after the main darshan.

    Common questions

Food offered to Jagannath is called mahaprasad only after it has also been offered to Vimala. Without that step, Puri's prasad is not considered complete.

No. It sits inside the Jagannath temple complex, so you visit it after entering the main temple.
